Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus today congratulated Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on winning the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
"I extend my hearty congratulations to María Corina Machado on receiving the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous fight for democracy in her beloved Venezuela," he said in a congratulatory message.
Machado has faced oppression with steadfast resolve, never wavering in her commitment to a freer and more just future for her country and her people, the message read.
As the Nobel Committee rightly stated: "Democracy depends on people who refuse to stay silent, who dare to step forward despite grave risk, and who remind us that freedom must never be taken for granted, but must always be defended — with words, with courage, and with determination."
She has dared to imagine a better world and worked tirelessly to make it so, the message added.

In what is now regarded as the deadliest zone for journalists, nearly 300 journalists and media workers have been killed since October 7, Bangladeshi writer and photojournalist Shahidul Alam and activist-health expert Ruhi Akhter set sail with the flotilla to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip. According to the latest reports, Shahidul Alam and fellow activists were detained after entering the red zone, approximately 220 km off Gaza's coast.
In these two years, the occupation has killed almost 10% of the Palestinian population. The entire population is experiencing a Phase 5 level of food insecurity and at least 459 people, including 154 children, have died due to starvation. Although the ships carry approximately $110,000 in aid, it is insufficient. The voyagers emphasise that their mission is not only to deliver relief in the face of mass devastation but also to affirm that Palestinians are not forgotten and to challenge world leaders' silence.
The last flotilla carrying Greta Thunberg among other activists were intercepted too, and its members were detained by Israeli forces and according to witnesses, they were held captive and treated inhumanely by the soldiers. After two years, the situation remains largely unchanged: Israel continues to contravene international law and to stop civilian-led efforts intended to bring aid to a starving population.

The brutal killing of journalist A.S.M. Hayat Uddin in Bagerhat has sparked outrage, anger, and strong reactions across the journalism community in Bangladesh. To meet the victim’s family and colleagues and to review the progress of the investigation, a high-level delegation from the Journalist Torture Prevention Cell Bangladesh is set to visit the crime scene next week.
According to preliminary reports, the slain journalist A.S.M. Hayat Uddin was employed with the Daily Bhorer Chetana. Allegations suggest that he was murdered in a premeditated attack. The victim’s family has filed a murder case with the local police station, and the police have already begun an investigation.
In an official statement, the Journalist Torture Prevention Cell Bangladesh declared, “If the safety of journalists cannot be ensured, the freedom of journalism will face a grave threat.” The organization demanded a thorough investigation and swift justice for those responsible for the killing.
Following the incident, several top leaders of the organization — including its Chief Md. Khairul Alam Rafiq (Daily Protidhiner Kagoj), Director (Investigation) Gouranga Debnath Opu (Kaler Kantho), Director (Operation & Media) Azharul Haque (Prothom Alo), Director (Service & Media) Sohag Arefin (Protidhiner Kagoj), and Unit Chief Rezaul Karim Reza — along with other members and representatives, will travel to Bagerhat.
Meanwhile, journalists in Bagerhat, along with the local Press Club, have staged human chains and protest demonstrations demanding justice. Leaders at the protest warned that if swift justice is not ensured, journalists across the country will launch tougher movements.

Maruf Billah: Former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Narsingdi District Detective Branch (DB), Mohammad Kamruzzaman, has started spreading false accusations against Police Superintendent (SP) Mohammad Abdul Hannan. This spread of false and fabricated claims on social media has sparked strong reactions across the district. People from all walks of life, including ordinary citizens, have strongly condemned this smear campaign.
Narsingdi Police Superintendent Mohammad Abdul Hannan stated that former DB OC Mohammad Kamruzzaman and Court Inspector Khandakar Zakir Hossain were accused of secretly selling 96 kg of marijuana that was kept in the police warehouse. The allegation was reported by Sub-Inspector Saminur Rahman, who was in charge of the warehouse, to the higher authorities. Upon this, the matter was brought to the attention of the police, and on the instructions of the DIG of the Dhaka Range, the two police officers were recalled to the Narsingdi Police Lines, and an investigation committee was formed under the leadership of Additional Police Superintendent Mohammad Kalimullah.
